ICDE Prize of Excellence awards 2009 Shanghai TV University
STVU provides access to learning in both formal and non-formal modes, enrolling over 120,000 students yearly in degree programmes, and more than 50,000 persons in non-degree programmes. Using both broadcast and digital technologies, the institution reaches learners in the most varied segments of society: schoolteachers in both urban and rural areas, the elderly, civil servants, and migrant workers, not only in its home province, but also in the most remote and needy corners of Western China. STVU has undertaken important innovative initiatives in recent years, such as the creation of a city-wide optic-cable broadcast-band learning network, which enables dynamic, interactive access to 230 community learning centres and specially-created learning platforms.
STVU will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2010, and the University President, Professor Zhang Deming, spoke in his acceptance speech about the honour of STVU being the first Chinese university to receive this award, and his institution’s obligation of duty to further the cause of ODL both in China and abroad.
